![]() ![]() Although they were built at the behest of a faith I don’t share, they were intended to be the most magnificent objects that humans are capable of creating. I’ve always liked cathedrals and massive, ornate churches-not for their religious message, but out of aesthetic appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into them. It was the largest single-aperture telescope in the world from 1963 until China’s FAST observatory, built along similar lines, surpassed it in 2016. The Arecibo telescope was one of the 116 images we sent into the cosmos on the Voyager Golden Record, one of a handful of pictures deemed as representative of what humanity has achieved. Being there is still one of the peak experiences of my life. It was like a hand of humanity, reaching out into the cosmos. The receiver, which hung suspended from a web of cables, was the size of a house, and the three towers that anchored the cables were large as skyscrapers in their own right. The dish was a vast metal bowl, more resembling a natural formation like a mountain or a river than something humans seemed capable of building. Standing on the viewing platform overlooking the telescope, I was overawed by the sheer scale of it. As I said at the time, it must be how Muslims on pilgrimage feel when the Kaaba draws into sight. To reach it, you have to traverse a narrow, bumpy dirt road that winds through the dense tropical forests and small homesteads of Puerto Rico’s rural backcountry.īut the trip proved worth it when I laid eyes on that immense, iconic dish, built into a giant natural depression in the landscape. The town of Arecibo is a considerable drive from San Juan, where I was staying, and the observatory itself is farther than that. I was in Puerto Rico on a family vacation, and despite a packed schedule, I had to carve out time to see it. Finally, we briefly discuss its competitiveness for radio astronomy, planetary and space & atmospheric science applications. In 2007, I saw the Arecibo Observatory for the first and last time. We present the performance of the NGAT-130 and show that it surpasses all other radar and single dish facilities. We refer to this configuration as NGAT-130. The weight of the structure is estimated to be 4300 tons which would be 53% of the weight of the Green Bank Telescope. The diameter of an equivalent collecting area single dish would be ~130 m, and the size of the structure would be ~146 m. We then present an antenna configuration consisting of one hundred and two 13 m diameter dishes. Our analysis shows that, although a single structure ~300 m in size is achievable, a scientifically competitive instrument 130 to 175 m in size can be developed in a more cost effective manner. In this study we investigate the feasibility of realizing the structure. ![]() The proposed structure could be a single plate or a set of closely spaced segments, and in either case it would have an equivalent collecting area of a parabolic dish of size 300 m. radio astronomy, planetary and space & atmospheric sciences. This envisioned state of the art instrument would offer capabilities for three research fields, viz. The phased array would function both as a transmitter and as a receiver. A phased array of small parabolic antennas placed on a tiltable plate-like structure forms the basis of the NGAT concept. ![]() (2021) developed by members of the Arecibo staff and user community immediately after the collapse of the 305 m legacy telescope. The Next Generation Arecibo Telescope (NGAT) was a concept presented in a white paper Roshi et al. ![]()
